October 18th 2016 Beekeeping

In August The Friends were treated to a very interesting talk on bee keeping. The Friends of Fryston Wood group presented an illustrated talk about the hives they have installed adjacent to their local wood and demonstrated the ins and outs of producing honey.

1-hives
At the invitation of the Fryston Friends, four members of the FHPW&W group visited the hives two weeks later. The hives are situated adjacent to Fryston Wood in a secure area.
2-well-suited
Everybody was issued with protective clothing and instructed how to approach the hives and the bees.
4-open-up
The hives were carefully opened once the bees had been ‘smoked’ to calm them down.
6-angies-turn
Members of the group then took it in turns to inspect the frames containing the combs and honey.
bees
The hive is home to about 50,000 bees, most of which are female workers. There is only one queen bee, can you spot her?

The Friends of Haw Park Wood and Wintersett group is very grateful to the Fryston Wood group for their very informative demonstration.
